2012-01-02 John Daniel Holdings is a venture capital investment holding company, seeking out complementary companies with high barriers to entry & high profit margins. They are involved in stem cell storage, the table grape industry & microfinance.

Trading subsidiaries

Lazaron

Lazaron Biotechnologies was a trading subsidiary at the start of the period (1 Jul 2010). During the period the Group established a marketing channel & sales force in Lazaron, which resulted in a 32% increase in revenue (achieved in the last 6 months of the period), but also increased operating expenses. By 30 Sep 2011, this business was approaching breakeven performance.

Subject to shareholder approval, Lazaron will continue to provide the current servies but will also focus on stem cell therapies in the future, and will also pursue the equine therapy development.

Vinguard

Vinguard was a trading subsidiaries at the start of the period (1 Jul 2010).

Involved in the table grape industry (WHICH HAS VERY LITTLE OVERLAP WITH STEM CELL BANKS). "The company's operations involve a relatively extended production & working capital cycle". The last period saw a 90% reduction in turnover, which was off-set to an extent "by the reduction in operating expenses resulting from the rationalisation of Vinguard's operations".

"The board continues to drive efforts to diversify the Vinguard product offering into other produce markets as well as Northern Hemisphere production areas".

Cryo-Save SA

Cryo-Save N.V. is an international family stem cell bank, with expertise in stem cell processing & storage. On 2 Jun 2011 Cryo-Save Group N.V. & John Daniel Holdings signed a MOU to create a new stem cell bank in SA. On 1 Jul 2011 JDH acquired a 50% stake in Rexisource, trading as Cryo-Save SA. Cryo-Save SA provides clients the option of storing cord tissue & stem cells from cord blood in SA or Belgium.

JDH Credit Services

Viscacom, trading as JDH Credit Services, was acquired on 1 Sep 2011 for a cash consideration of R100. JDH Credit Services is the first acquisition of the new Financial Services Division of JDH, & is a micro finance business providing financial services to 3rd party company employees. WHAT IS THEIR EDGE IN THE INCREASINGLY COMPETITIVE MICRO FINANCE ARENA? As at 30 Jun 2011 there was a loan book of R2.6m & 200 clients.

MICROFINANCE HAS VERY LITTLE OVERLAP WITH THE TABLE GRAPE INDUSTRY OR STEM CELL STORAGE.
