Oil price in Rands |
28 May 2012. If you want to be an investment analyst you cannot do it without keeping track of the Rand price of oil - and if you're hiring an asset manager it's a good test to ask them what the latest Rand (not $) oil price changes have been and how it's impacted the attractiveness of specific stocks, e.g.:
SASOL & SACOIL, who produce oil, are positively impacted by rises in the oil price
Most companies don't produce oil, so it's a cost and rises in the oil price mean less profit. The extent to which changes in the oil price impact profit depend on the portion that oil related products form of the company's cost base and their ability to pass these costs through to customers. For example 1time and Comair use significant amounts of avgas, so increases in the oil price have a large impact on their cost base, if they cannot pass these increased costs through to passengers they will suffer losses (as was the case in 2011). The analysis is slightly more complex if companies are conducting currency hedging or oil price hedging.
A secondary effect is caused by increases in the Rand oil price meaning that South African consumers have less money in their pockets to spend on other goods.
Intraday price on the 31st May, at Brent Crude oil price of $103.47 and R/$ of R8.51, is R881.
